The Making of Jamarey's Senior Photography Session

Allow me to introduce you to Jamarey, a Class of 2020 senior from John Hardin High School in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. Jamarey liked what she saw in my portfolio and came to me to book her Shelbyville Senior Photography session. Jamarey is a spirited and truly fun girl that I like to refer to as my “glam girl”. She likes glamorous, pretty things, but also enjoys edgy and urban settings.

Planning a session to showcase her personality was so much fun. She LOVED her session so much that, before the first shot was even taken, she told her mom “she has to be my wedding photographer, she gets me”. And no - she’s not even engaged!

Earlier in the year, Jamarey had gone on a special mother/daughter trip to Nashville to shop for the perfect prom dress. The weekend was cut short because of COVID-19 outbreak that hit Franklin, TN that weekend. Unfortunately she never had the opportunity to wear that prom dress, so we HAD to get all the shots we could in that gorgeous dress.

I set everything up ahead of time and took her to The Gatsby on Main in Shelbyville, Kentucky. They are a wedding and reception venue with a ballroom and are an elegant, classic setting for a photography session - a perfect fit for her!

She put on her Tiffany Blue Ball Gown and we started getting the prom dress shots. I wanted to make sure she got her money out of that dress.

After shooting with the prom dress, we stayed in that venue while Jamarey put on a sophisticated (but still fun and youthful) red dress. It looked amazing on her so we took a variety of shots at other locations in the ballroom with the red dress. If you weren’t there, you would have never known it was in the same place! That is the beauty of finding a location that can encompass a variety of different looks and moods.

Jamarey came to her senior session initially wearing what I referred to as a “badass” outfit, a stylish urban look that she pulled off easily. I put her in another space in the ballroom (the Grooms Getting Ready room) with that outfit, again the same basic location but you would have never known. This was an edgy and fun location, perfect for that outfit!

Then we left the Gatsby and moved to the outdoor shots. I wanted to get that edgy outfit with some red in the background and knew just the perfect spot to really make everything pop. We went to a business location (that was closed on the weekends) and photographed in their parking lot showing that the most understated locations can make some of the most dynamic photos.

Next we went to an historic building in Shelbyville and photographed at the pillars and in the courtyard there. There are a lot of looks at this one location. I told her to put on the gold shirt, because I knew it would really shine against the red of the building.

And yes - it looked AMAZING!

Every senior needs some brick wall in their life, so we hit up a nearby wall that provided a great backdrop. Brick walls are basic, but iconic and look great for everyone.

Finally we hit the park for some basic cap and gown pictures. We ran into a quick snag here when it came to light that she forgot her cap and her mom wasn’t exactly thrilled about that!.  But her red gown stood out and looked awesome against the background and natural colors of greens and browns in the park.

We had a lot of fun, took a lot of pictures, and got some amazing portraits. Jamarey owned her senior portrait session like a boss! These are portraits that her parents will treasure for a lifetime and I was honored to be chosen to be Jamarey’s senior photographer. I’m thankful that Jamarey and her family drove down from Hardin County for her Shelbyville Senior Photography session!
